How to Convert YouTube to MP3 in Chrome (No Copy-Paste, No Ads)
By Video to MP3 Converter team · Updated 2026-11-01 · 5 min read
Short answer
Install the Video to MP3 Converter extension, open the YouTube video and click its toolbar icon. In the side panel, keep "Audio" selected, choose MP3 (320 kbps by default), M4A or WAV, and press Convert. The file saves to your Downloads folder with the title, artist and cover art already filled in.
Most YouTube to MP3 tools work the same tired way: copy the link, paste it into a website, dodge the fake download buttons, close the pop-up tab, then rename a file called "videoplayback.mp3". This guide does it from a side panel that sits next to the video instead — nothing to paste, nothing to dodge.
It takes about a minute the first time and two clicks after that. Everything below works the same in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS.
What you need
- Chrome or Edge on a computer (not a phone)
- The free Video to MP3 Converter extension
- A YouTube video, Short or YouTube Music song that plays normally in your browser
Steps
- 1
Install the extension and pin it
Add Video to MP3 Converter from the Chrome Web Store (or Microsoft Edge Add-ons). Then click the puzzle-piece icon in your toolbar and pin it, so the icon is always one click away.
No account is needed. You can sign in with Google later if you want a membership to follow you, but converting works without it.
- 2
Open the video and click the icon
Play the video you want to keep. Click the Video to MP3 Converter icon and a side panel opens beside the player. Within a second it shows the video it found under Playing in this tab: title, channel and length.
Leave the panel open if you like. When you move to another video, it follows along and briefly marks the card New so you know it switched.
- 3
Pick Audio and a format
Under the video card there is an Audio | Video switch. Keep Audio. The format line underneath says MP3 · 320 kbps the first time; press Change to pick MP3 at 320, 256, 192 or 128 kbps, M4A (the original audio track) or WAV (lossless).
Whatever you pick is remembered for next time, so after the first video you rarely need to touch it. Not sure which to choose? See which format to pick.
- 4
Check the file name
Below the format you will see the file name the panel is about to use. It is built from the video title with the usual clutter removed — "(Official Video)", "[4K]", "Lyrics" and the like — so "Nora Vale - Paper Planes (Official Video) [4K]" becomes "Nora Vale - Paper Planes.mp3".
Want a different name? Click the pencil, type it and press Save. Slashes, colons and other characters that would break a file name are removed for you.
- 5
Convert and find the file
Press the big button — it reads Convert to MP3 · 320 (or whatever you chose). A job card appears under it and moves through Waiting, Getting ready…, Converting and Saving to your computer….
The conversion runs on our servers, so you can close the panel or switch tabs. When the file is saved you get a notification; click it, or Show in folder in the panel, to jump straight to the file in your Downloads folder.
Which format should I choose?
The right format depends on where the file is going, not on which number is biggest.
| Format | Best for | Size per minute | Tags written in |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP3 · 320 kbps | Phones, car stereos, any player | ≈ 2.4 MB | Title, artist, cover art |
| MP3 · 128–192 kbps | Podcasts, lectures, saving space | ≈ 1–1.4 MB | Title, artist, cover art |
| M4A | Apple Music, iPhone, best quality for the size | ≈ 1 MB | Title, artist, cover art |
| WAV | Editing in Audacity, GarageBand, a DAW | ≈ 10 MB | Title |
Shorts and YouTube Music
Shorts work exactly like normal videos: open the Short, click the icon, convert. On music.youtube.com the panel picks up the song that is playing and, because YouTube Music knows the artist, names the file "Artist - Song" automatically.
If the video is part of a playlist, the panel shows Convert the whole playlist under the video card. That is covered in convert a whole playlist.
Podcasts and lectures
Long talks work the same way: open the episode or lecture, click the icon and convert. For speech, MP3 at 128 or 192 kbps sounds identical to 320 at half the size — press Change and pick it once; the panel remembers. Audio up to 2 hours long is supported, so a full episode or a whole class fits in one file you can play offline on the commute or before an exam.
Converting another one while the first runs
You do not have to wait. Open the next video and press Convert again — the panel says Another one? It joins the queue. and the new job waits its turn. Jobs keep running when you close the panel, and your last 20 conversions stay in the Recent list (the clock icon at the top), ready to show in the folder or convert again with the same settings.
If a conversion fails
A failed conversion is retried once automatically. If it still does not work, the job card says why in plain words:
| What the panel says | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| This video can't be opened | Deleted, private or never public | Nothing — it can't be saved |
| This video isn't available in your region | Region-locked | Nothing we can work around |
| …needs sign-in or an age check | Age-restricted or members-only | Not supported yet |
| This is a live stream | Still live | Convert it after the stream ends |
| The site is blocking us for the moment | Temporary block on our servers | Try again in a few minutes |
| Today's conversions are used up | Daily limit of 50 reached | The panel shows when you can continue |
Videos longer than 2 hours are flagged before you start, so you never wait for a conversion that cannot finish.
On your phone?
Browser extensions do not run in mobile Chrome or Safari, so this works on a computer only. Convert on your computer, then copy the file to your phone — over USB, AirDrop, or by dropping it into a cloud folder.
